Retainers » Important Information About Wearing Retainers
Important Information about wearing retainers after brace treatment.
You / Your child will soon be having the fixed braces removed and will be provided with removable retainers to hold the teeth in their new position. Retainers are extremely important, as the teeth will revert to their old positions if they are not retained after treatment. It is essential that the retainers are worn as directed, to ensure that this does not happen.
Please note the following information.
The removable retainers are to be worn full time, day and night for AT LEAST 1 month.
Following this the retainer must be worn for at least 12 hours per day (mostly whilst sleeping) for AT LEAST 1 year.
We will review You / Your child 3 months after the retainers are fitted to check they are being worn as directed. Please bring your retainers to this appointment.
We will send for You / Your child again 9 months later (1 year after the braces where removed) by post, please make a note of the approximate timing for this and contact us if you feel this correspondence may have been lost in the post. Please bring your retainers to this appointment.
If the retainers are lost, please contact the surgery immediately to have them replaced. The approximate cost of replacement is £70.00 each lost retainer.
If You / Your child feels that the teeth are moving, in spite of good retainer wear, PLEASE CONTACT THE SURGERY as soon as possible.
Our advice would be to continue to wear the retainers on a lifelong basis to maintain the teeth in the corrected position following the first year of retainer wear.
DO NOT STOP WEARING THE RETAINERS UNLESS DIRECTED TO DO SO BY YOUR ORTHODONTIST.
